Why are the front brake discs of cars larger than the rear brake discs, and why do the front brake pads wear out more?
Why are the front brake discs of cars larger than the rear brake discs, and why do the front brake pads wear out faster? The main reasons are as follows:
Most modern cars (including urban SUVs) are front-engine, with major components such as the engine, transmission, and drive axle installed in the front half of the vehicle. This arrangement leads to an uneven distribution of mass between the front and rear of the car, typically reaching a ratio of 55:45 or even 60:40. In other words, the front wheels bear a greater weight, and naturally, they will also experience greater braking force. Therefore, to provide the front wheels with greater braking force, the brake pads and discs for the front wheels must be made larger, which is the first reason why the front brake discs are larger than the rear ones.
Another reason is that mass transfer occurs when a car brakes. When the car brakes, although the wheels have slowed down to a stop, the body continues to move forward due to inertia because of the flexible connection between the body and the wheels, causing the car's center of gravity to shift forward. This phenomenon is known as braking mass transfer. In other words, when the car brakes, an additional portion of mass is added to the front wheels; the faster the car is going and the harder the braking, the greater the mass transfer, and the load on the front wheels increases. In this case, the braking force on the front wheels also needs to increase accordingly, thus requiring larger brake pads and discs.
Due to the two reasons mentioned above, the load on the front wheels during braking is much greater than that on the rear wheels, with the front wheels typically bearing over 70% of the total braking force of the car. The rear wheels themselves bear less mass, and due to the effect of braking mass transfer, the demand for braking force is even smaller. Therefore, to ensure that the braking force on the front wheels is greater than that on the rear wheels, the size of the front brake discs should be larger than that of the rear brake discs, with the rear discs usually being 15 to 30 millimeters smaller. This is also why the brake pads on the front wheels wear out faster. Typically, the front wheels need to be replaced twice for every one time the rear wheels are replaced. When replacing brake pads, we must remember: high-quality, safe, and reliable brand brake pads must be used for the front wheels, and inferior brake pads must never be used.
